“Hornsea’s New Town Hall was created by converting a former Methodist Chapel into new council offices and community centre. At the start of the project the staircase was the cause of much debate – the architect was insistent that a concrete stair must be used for sound attenuation purposes. Initially a pre-cast concrete staircase had been proposed, but the difficulty of getting several 2.5 tonne flights of stairs inside a Victorian chapel made that route almost impossible – certainly it raised many concerns about the H & S implications as there was no easy way to use a crane. A search of the internet found John Brophy’s company – Concrete Stairs. A cast in-situ staircase seemed to be the ideal solution; it eliminated the manual handling issues of a pre-cast stair – it also allowed the stairs to be tailored exactly to our needs and importantly the stairs actually contributed to the structural integrity of the building; rather than simply being a dead load applied to the structure. John proved to be a complete solution to this unique problem – he arranged for the structural calculations to be done on our behalf and he and his team were a pleasure to work with; our staff genuinely enjoyed working with them. They were also willing to work through weekends to ensure that our project was delivered on time. The finishedfour flight staircase was excellent – we would not hesitate to use John again.”
